Turning point
Shanghai in September
Heat breaks, humidity drops, crowds clear. From mid-September onward Shanghai becomes the city people imagine.
September is the month Shanghai recovers. The heat usually breaks sometime in the middle, humidity drops, and the light changes — the flat white glare of summer gives way to something softer in the afternoons.
Prices stay reasonable almost all month and crowds are moderate, with one exception: the run-up to National Day on 1 October. Book the last week of September with the same caution you would apply to the holiday itself.
There is still typhoon risk early in the month. By mid-September the probability falls sharply.
What is good about it
- Some of the best walking weather of the year after mid-month
- Reasonable prices and manageable crowds
- The light in late afternoon is excellent for the Bund
Watch out for
- Early September can still be hot and typhoon-affected
- Avoid the last few days — National Day migration starts before the 1st
- Mid-Autumn Festival often falls in September, adding a short holiday
What to bring
- Layers — September days are warm, evenings noticeably cooler
- A light jacket for after dark
- Walking shoes; this is prime walking season
The verdict
Excellent value. Mid to late September is close to ideal walking weather without April’s crowds.

Questions
Everything on this site is written and re-checked on the ground. When something changes, this page changes.
September or April for visiting?
Very close. September has better light and fewer tourists; April has longer days and marginally greener parks. Either is fine.
When does the heat actually break?
Usually mid-month, but it varies by a week or two each year. Check the ten-day forecast before you pack.
What is Mid-Autumn Festival?
A family holiday with mooncakes and lanterns, usually September or early October. It adds a short public holiday but far less disruption than National Day.
