July with a risk premium

Shanghai in August

Marginally cooler than July, still very hot, and now with the highest typhoon probability of the year.

August is Shanghai at its most typhoon-prone. The city itself is rarely devastated — it sits well north of where most storms make landfall — but a passing system can shut airports for a day and cancel everything on the coast.

Otherwise August is July with slightly lower temperatures and slightly lower prices in the last two weeks as schools prepare to reopen. The same rules apply: walk early, hide at midday, come out again at dusk.

What is good about it

  • Slightly cheaper and slightly cooler than July
  • Long, dramatic evening skies over the river
  • Mango and lychee season

Watch out for

  • Peak typhoon probability — check forecasts daily
  • Still very hot and humid
  • Crowds remain high until school terms start

What to bring

  • Same heat kit as July
  • Download offline maps — losing data during a storm is common
  • Refundable bookings wherever possible

Only slightly better than July, with more weather risk. Visit if it is the only time available.

FAQ

Questions

Everything on this site is written and re-checked on the ground. When something changes, this page changes.

Should I cancel if a typhoon is forecast?

Not necessarily. Most pass harmlessly. Do have flexible onward tickets and a buffer day before an international flight.

Is August cheaper than July?

Slightly, and noticeably cheaper in the final fortnight.

What happens if my flight is cancelled?

Airlines rebook you, usually within 24–48 hours. Factor that slack into any onward travel plans.
