Who writes this

About

A small editorial team in Shanghai, writing the city it lives in.

ShanghaiWalk is put together by a small editorial team based in Shanghai. Every route is walked by the editor who writes it, in the way people who live here walk — not the way a tour bus does.

How the routes are made

Each route is walked end to end before it is published. Then it is written up with the things that actually decide whether it works: which metro exit to come out of, which direction to walk it in, how long it really takes, and where the toilets are.

When something changes — a museum closes on a new day, a gate moves, a ferry timetable shifts — the page is re-walked and the date at the bottom of the page is updated. That date is the most honest thing on this site.

Why the site exists

Shanghai now receives millions of short-stay visitors a year, most of them arriving visa-free in transit, and almost none of the English-language material written for them is produced by anyone who has recently stood in the place they are describing. That gap is the whole reason this site is worth making.

The routes cover the whole city, not one district. The airport and exhibition district gets more attention than its share of the guidebooks, because that is where short-stay business travellers actually are.

Who runs it

ShanghaiWalk is an independent publisher of field-checked walking routes. Some pages use affiliate links; where they do, a note is shown by the link and our disclosure page explains how the site is funded. Our editorial choices are never influenced by commercial relationships.

The site is funded by affiliate links, by the guide directory — listed guides pay for placement — and by the occasional paid partnership. Travellers never pay us anything, and commercial terms are agreed case by case. If that ever changes, funding page will say so before it does.
