Transit / layover
6 Hours in Shanghai
Landed at Hongqiao or Pudong with half a day and no plan. Two versions: stay near the airport, or spend ninety minutes of it on Line 2.
Six hours is enough for one thing done well and nothing else. The mistake is trying to see three districts and spending four of your six hours in transit.
Below are two honest versions. Pick based on where you land, not on what looks better on paper.
The plan
Get out of the airport
Both airports are on metro lines. Hongqiao is 30 minutes from Jing'an on Line 2 with no changes; Pudong is 45–60 minutes on Line 2, or 8 minutes on the maglev to Longyang Road (separate ticket). Buy a transport QR code or single-journey tokens at the station — do not queue for a taxi at arrivals.
Version A — from Hongqiao: stay local
If you land at Hongqiao and have under seven hours, do not go into the centre. Walk the NECC plaza and Xin Hongqiao Central Garden, eat at Hongqiao Tiandi, and be back at security with time to spare.
Version B — from either airport: one district, done properly
Go straight to East Nanjing Road, walk to the Bund, spend the whole time on the waterfront and one side street. Do not add a museum. Do not add a second district.
Eat once, somewhere real
One proper meal beats two snacks. In the centre, pick a restaurant with a queue and a menu with pictures; near Hongqiao, the Tiandi complex is the safest bet for a sit-down dinner that takes cards.
One thing you did not plan
This is the hour that makes the trip memorable. Walk a lane neighbourhood, sit in a park and watch the dancing, take the ferry across the river because it costs almost nothing.
Back to the airport
Leave two hours before a international departure, ninety minutes for domestic. The metro is reliable but buy your ticket before you need it.

Can I leave the airport during a layover in Shanghai?
If you qualify for the transit exemption or hold a valid Chinese visa, yes. Check your nationality against the current exemption list before you plan around it.
Is six hours enough to see Shanghai?
Enough for one district walked properly, or for the Bund and one meal. Not enough for two districts.
