The hub concourse
Start above the railway station. The departure hall is vast, quiet after 21:00, and worth two minutes just for the scale.
Luggage storage is available in the station if you are between flights — verify current location and price.
Business travel · Hongqiao
You landed at Hongqiao, you have a hotel and two free hours, and every guide says the city centre is forty minutes away. Here is what is actually outside your door.
Hongqiao is not a sightseeing district and nobody claims it is. It is a transport hub, an exhibition centre and a business district, and if you are here for a trade fair or an overnight between flights, the relevant question is not "what is the famous thing nearby" but "what can I do with an evening without spending ninety minutes in a taxi".
This is the answer: ninety minutes on wide, empty, well-lit pavements, past the exhibition centre lit up at night, ending somewhere you can eat properly. It is not the postcard Shanghai. It is the one you are actually standing in.

The four-leaf-clover building. At night its facade is lit and the plaza is empty — a genuinely striking piece of industrial scale.
Walk the plaza from the south side for the best view of the whole facade. It is a 15-minute walk from the station concourse.
A large public park in the middle of the business district. Lawns, a lake, and after dark, almost nobody.
Well lit and patrolled. This is the pleasant surprise of the district — a real park, not a decorative one.
Finish at the mixed-use complex: restaurants, a cinema, and the highest concentration of open dinner options here.
Most places take foreign cards here; smaller spots outside the complex may not. Carry a little cash.
Line 2 runs straight into the city: 30 minutes to Jing'an Temple, 40 to East Nanjing Road and the Bund.
For a six-hour layover this is the better plan — see the "Short on time" section for timed versions.
Start at Hongqiao Railway Station (Line 2 / 10), Exit 1. Finish: Hongqiao Tiandi / back to the hotel.
Keep walking
You have seen the skyline from the Bund. This is the version from underneath, plus the ferry, the riverside park and one very good museum.
A gilded temple inside a glass-and-steel district, then ten minutes into lanes where the 1930s are still doing business.
One and a half hours, timed to the light: bridges, the promenade, the clock, then two yuan for the ferry back across the river.
