Where the river meets the sea — the Wusong mouth
The only one of the ten you can reach on a single metro line with no transfers. Where the Huangpu runs into the Yangtze, on ground that was fought over twice.
If you do one route from this list, do this one. It is the only one of the ten where you can leave the city centre on one train and start walking.
The Wusong mouth is where the Huangpu empties into the Yangtze, and therefore where Shanghai begins and ends as a river port. It was fought over in 1932 and again in 1937, and the memorial park on the bank is the reason the ground here is not built on.
The route runs the north bank: cruise terminal, lighthouse camp, ferry pier, memorial park, and the 180 m observation tower at Changtan.
The short version
There is a four-kilometre stretch that does the whole thing: start at the Shanghaiese World development on the waterfront, walk west past the lighthouse camp and the Baoyang Road ferry pier, through the Songhu Battle memorial park, and finish at the Changtan observation tower.
That is a morning. You can be back in the centre for lunch, which is not true of any other route here.
What makes it worth it
The scale. Standing at the mouth, the Yangtze is not a river you can see across, and the ships going past are oceangoing.
And the layering: a working cruise terminal, a memorial to a battle, a ferry pier still in use, and a wetland edge — within four kilometres.
Getting there
Line 3 to Songbin Road or Shuichan Road. No transfers from most of the centre.
Go on a weekday if you want the bank to yourself. Weekends the memorial park and the waterfront fill up with local families, which is pleasant but not the same thing.
Getting there without a car
Line 3 to Songbin Road or Shuichan Road — no transfers from the centre.
The honest part
This is one of the city’s official countryside routes, not a ShanghaiWalk route. Distances are as published.
FAQ
Questions
Everything on this site is written and re-checked on the ground. When something changes, this page changes.
Is this really part of the 100?
Yes — the Wusong mouth route is one of the ten city-level lines, and by some distance the most accessible.
How long does the short version take?
About two hours at a normal pace including the memorial park. Add an hour if you go up the observation tower.
Is the memorial park open?
It is a public park with a museum attached. Check opening times before you go — these change.
Can I continue west along the bank?
Yes, the full line runs about 50 km west along the north bank. It becomes industrial and then rural, and it is not the interesting part.
