Hongkou: Shanghai's Jewish Quarter

A neighbourhood that took in 20,000 refugees in the late 1930s, still standing, still lived in, and almost entirely missing from most itineraries.

Hongkou: Shanghai's Jewish Quarter

Between 1938 and 1941, Shanghai took in around 20,000 Jewish refugees from Europe — more than most countries did — because it required no visa. Most settled in a few blocks of Hongkou. The buildings are still here, and so is the street pattern: low brick houses, small shops, and none of the polish of the Concession.

This is the most rewarding walk on this site for anyone who has already seen the Bund, and the least crowded. Go on a weekday morning when the market streets are alive.

01

Ohel Moshe Synagogue

The former synagogue, now the Jewish Refugees Museum. The restored prayer hall and the surrounding courtyard are the core of the story.

There is an entrance fee and it closes one day a week — verify both before you go. Allow 45 minutes, not 15.

02

Huoshan Road & Zhoushan Road

The two streets the refugees actually lived on. Look up: the balconies and window frames are original.

This is a living neighbourhood, not an open-air museum. Photograph buildings, not front doors.

30 min
03

White Horse Inn

A restored 1930s café that belonged to a refugee family. A good pause point with a story attached.

Small menu, reasonable coffee. It is a memorial site and a business at the same time.

20 min
04

Tilanqiao market streets

Walk the lanes north of Changyang Road. Wet market, hardware shops, barbers — the everyday layer of the district.

Mornings are best. By early afternoon most of the market has packed up.

30 min
05

Broadway Mansions

Walk west to the river. The 1934 apartment block at the mouth of Suzhou Creek, with the best cheap view in the city from its upper floors.

The upper-floor viewpoint is a business (a restaurant or bar) — go in, order something, and you have earned the window.

25 min

Getting there and back

Start at Tilanqiao (Line 12), Exit 1. Finish: Broadway Mansions, then back to Tilanqiao or on to the Bund.

Everything on this site is written and re-checked on the ground. When something changes, this page changes.

Is the Jewish Refugees Museum in Shanghai worth it?

Yes, if you have any interest in the history. Give it 45 minutes. The neighbourhood around it is arguably as interesting as the museum.

How do I get to the Hongkou Jewish Quarter?

Metro Line 12 to Tilanqiao, Exit 1. The museum is a short walk from the station.

Is Hongkou safe to walk around?

Yes. It is a normal residential district. Ordinary city awareness is enough — no special precautions.
