¥180–220
The Shanghai Tower observation deck
The tallest building in China at 632 metres. Expensive, and better than the Oriental Pearl Tower for views.
The Shanghai Tower observation deck sits on the 118th floor at 546 metres, above every other building in Shanghai. It is the highest indoor viewing platform in the world.
The thing that determines whether it is worth ¥180 is entirely atmospheric visibility. On a clear winter afternoon you can see for tens of kilometres; on a hazy summer day you will see a grey wall and be disappointed.
Tower or Pearl?
The Shanghai Tower is taller, modern, has better sightlines and is more expensive. The Oriental Pearl Tower is lower, older, more kitsch and more fun for children.
For views alone: Shanghai Tower. For the experience and photographs of Shanghai: both are defensible, but do not do both.
Timing
Aim to be up there about an hour before sunset in clear weather so you get daylight, sunset and city lights in one visit.
Morning visits are quieter. Weekday afternoons are the sweet spot for avoiding crowds.
Saving money
Prices vary by time slot and by whether you buy online in advance, with online booking usually cheaper. There are also combination tickets with nearby attractions.
Check the official visibility policy — some platforms offer partial refunds or free return visits on days with very poor visibility.
Verdict
Do it once if the weather is clear. Do not do it on a hazy day.
Skip it if
Visibility is poor. Ask at the entrance before paying — a common trick is checking the visibility guarantee.
