The West Bund: Long Museum and neighbours
Former industrial riverfront turned into five kilometres of park, with the best contemporary art museums in the city along it.
Shanghai converted several kilometres of former industrial riverbank south of Xuhui into a continuous park with museums built from old structures — a coal hopper, an aircraft hangar, a power station.
The result is a genuinely excellent cultural district paralleled by a very good riverside walk, and it is barely mentioned in most Shanghai itineraries.
The museums
Long Museum — built around a preserved coal-unloading hopper, holding serious contemporary Chinese art. Yuz Museum — in a former aircraft hangar, with large-scale installation work. Power Station of Art — a converted power station, near the centre end of the strip.
Each charges separately, typically ¥50–100, and none require booking except for major exhibitions.
The riverside itself
The promenade runs continuously with lawns, running track, dog walkers and basketball courts. It is the best place in Shanghai to see how people here actually spend free time.
Sunset over the water looking north is excellent.
Practicalities
Allow a half day. Metro cloud nine road or Longyao Road, then walk toward the river.
Dining has improved around the museums but is limited; consider eating before you go.
Verdict
The most rewarding half-day in Shanghai that most visitors skip. Go.
Skip it if
You actively dislike contemporary art and you are only in town for two days.
