Jing’an Temple

Originally built in the third century and rebuilt repeatedly, Jing’an Temple now occupies a very prominent site where Nanjing Road West meets Jing’an, wrapped in glass towers.

Its photograph — golden hall, illuminated at dusk, reflected in modern façades — is one of the defining images of Shanghai. Going inside is optional; standing outside at the right hour costs nothing.

Inside versus outside

The exterior and the approach are free and give you most of what is worth having. Interior entry gives access to the main hall and to a large bronze bell.

It is an active place of worship, so behave accordingly: no photography where signs prohibit it, keep your voice down.

When

Illuminated after dark and best photographed from across the road shortly after lights come on.

Weekday mornings are calmest for actually visiting.

Verdict

Thirty minutes outside plus the interior if you want it. Everyone photographs it; far fewer go in.

Skip it if

You have limited time in Shanghai and temples are not your interest.
