Pudong

Pudong & Lujiazui

Farmland in 1990, three of the tallest buildings in the world now. Best seen from underneath, then from the water.

Feel
Vertical, financial, disorienting at street level
Good for
Skyline, observation decks, riverside parks
Half a day
2 hours
Best hour
Late afternoon into dusk
Crowd level
Moderate at the deck, low on the riverside
Metro
Line 2 / 14 Lujiazui, Exit 1

Pudong is the view everyone photographs from the Bund, and an oddly unsatisfying place to be inside: the towers are too close together to read from the pavement. Do the observation deck if the day is clear, walk the riverside, then leave on the ferry — which is where Pudong finally makes sense.
