West Bund — galleries, cranes and the river

Eight kilometres of former industrial riverbank turned into museums and running track, walked from the north end south, with the exhibitions that are actually on rather than the ones listed in a guidebook.

West Bund — galleries, cranes and the river

Seventh sample card. The West Bund is the fastest-changing stretch of public space in Shanghai, and the one least covered by English-language material written recently.

A guide who walks it weekly can tell you which exhibition is on this month, which building has just opened, and where the useful shade is — none of which is stable enough to print.

What this guide covers

The riverfront from the former coal hoppers down past the museum cluster, including the buildings that are themselves the argument: converted aircraft hangars, a concrete grain silo, and a runway that became a promenade.

What is currently hanging in each space, how long each takes, and which weeks of the year nothing much is on.

How it runs

Three to four hours, mostly flat and open, with very little shade. Partly outdoors — this is the line most affected by weather and the reason to check the forecast before agreeing.

Weekday mornings. Free exhibition days bring crowds that make the interiors unworkable, and a good guide will steer you around them.

Where the line stops

Guiding and interpretation. Gallery and museum admission is bought by you at the door or through their own official channel; timed-entry slots are not pre-booked in your name.

Nothing is pre-reserved, nothing is paid in advance on your behalf, and the route adapts to whichever doors are open that day.

Routes this guide covers

This site publishes profiles and makes introductions. Nothing is booked, paid or guaranteed here: the quote, the timing and how you settle are arranged directly between you and the guide.

FAQ

Questions

Everything on this site is written and re-checked on the ground. When something changes, this page changes.

Do we need to know anything about contemporary art?

No. The value here is context — what this riverbank was and why it looks like this. The art you can take or leave.

What if several things are closed?

It happens, particularly between exhibitions. Ask the guide what is actually open the week you are coming before you commit.

Is it walkable in summer?

Technically yes, practically no. Between June and September do this early or not at all.
