Transit Without a Visa

China allows eligible travellers to enter without a visa for a limited stay when they are in transit to a third country. The exemption has been extended several times and its scope has changed with each extension.

This page explains the shape of it. It does not determine eligibility — verify against the current official list before you book.

The three conditions

Your nationality is on the current exemption list; you enter and exit through designated ports; and you hold a confirmed onward ticket to a third country. All three matter.

A round trip back to your departure country generally does not count as transit. The onward journey needs a third destination.

How to enter

Tell the airline at check-in that you are using the transit exemption — they will look it up before you board. At immigration, use the designated transit lane and have your onward ticket and accommodation details ready.

You may be fingerprinted and photographed. This is routine.

What you can do

Stay within the permitted area for the permitted duration. Overstaying is a serious matter — know your exit date and do not cut it close.

Keep your arrival card and accommodation records until you leave.

When it does not apply

If your nationality is not listed, if your ports are not designated, or if your itinerary is not genuine transit, you need a visa. Apply before you fly; there is no reliable on-arrival route.
