Free to wander
Evenings in the former Concession
Small bars, late cafés, dogs being walked, and nobody trying to sell you anything. The best ordinary evening in Shanghai.
The streets around Anfu, Wuyuan, Wukang and Fuxing Road West have the best evening texture in the city: low buildings, lit interiors, people walking dogs, small bars doing modest trade, and no hard sell.
It rewards wandering without a plan more than any other part of Shanghai.
What happens when
Before 8pm is mostly people eating and shops closing. After 9pm the small bars fill. Weekends run later; weeknights are calmer and often nicer.
Many small venues close by midnight on weeknights, unlike the big club areas.
Practicalities
Metro lines close around 11pm depending on line, so plan your return — Didi is cheap and abundant in this area.
Respect that these are residential streets. Noise carries and people live twenty metres from the bars.
Where to start
Changshu Road or Shanghai Library station, then walk whichever direction looks lit.
Try not to plan it — the point is that it rewards aimlessness.
Verdict
This is what I recommend instead of another rooftop. Free, pleasant, and genuinely Shanghai.
